{"id":3186,"date":"2023-10-30T19:36:02","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T16:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepixelcurve.com\/wp\/edubin\/?p=3186"},"modified":"2024-08-17T18:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T15:00:00","slug":"how-to-turn-education-into-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.umu.ac.ug\/?p=3186","title":{"rendered":"Open Access Week &#8211; 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Our Open Access week this year will run from to day <strong>30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0October 2023 to 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0November 2023<\/strong> guided by the theme \u201c<strong>Community<em>\u00a0over Commercialization<\/em><\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p>We are in an era of Open Science where the need to join the movement is emphasized.\u00a0<strong>Open Science<\/strong>\u00a0involves practices that aim at making scientific research and output more accessible, transparent and collaborative in accordance with fair principles. The key elements of Open Science include;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Open Access:<\/strong> making research publications freely available to the public removing paywalls and subscription fees.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Open data:<\/strong> sharing research data and datasets with the public and other researchers to promote transparency, reproducibility and reuse of data for further investigations.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Open source<\/strong>: using and developing open-source software and tools for scientific research to foster collaboration and innovation.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\">Preprints:<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\"> Sharing research findings in preprint servers like arXiv and bioRxiv for review and quick feedback from the scientific community.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\">Collaboration:<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\"> among researchers both within and across disciplines hence interdisciplinary research to tackle complex issues.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\">Open Education:<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--edubin-body-font-family); font-size: 1rem;\"> Sharing educational resources and materials openly, enabling broader access to knowledge and educational opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>All this is driven by the desire to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, increase the quality and rigor of research and address issues of transparency, inclusivity and accountability.<\/p>\r\n<p>For researchers it is advisable to create accounts and obtain persistent identifiers such as,<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Google scholar<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) Identifies an individual researcher.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>DOI (Digital Object Identifier) makes content discoverable and for visibility it is better to share DOIs instead of PDFs of your publications.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>ROR (Research Organization Registry) maps organizations to identify where the researcher comes from.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>All these come with a lot\u00a0of benefits such as reputation building, Interoperability, continuity, discoverability, networking and capacity building among others.
