Perceptions of Pregnant Adolescents 13 to 19 Years Regarding Their Antenatal Care Needs in Barr Sub County, Lira District.

The purpose of the study was to describe the views on antenatal care needs of pregnant adolescents aged 13 to 19 attending antenatal care in Barr sub-county Lira district. The Major objective was to explore the perceptions of pregnant adolescents 13 to 19 years regarding their antenatal care needs in Barr sub county, Lira District. The study had two specific objectives notable: to describe the antenatal needs of pregnant adolescents 13 to 19 years in Barr sub county, Lira District; and to identify support aspects available for adolescents 13 to 19 years during pregnancy in Barr sub county, Lira District.
This study used a descriptive phenomenological approach of qualitative data collection.12 pregnant adolescents aged 13 to 19 were selected from Barr sub-county in Lira District by using purposive sampling. Data was collected through semi structured one on one in-depth interviews and participant observations. The interviews were hand written and transcribed verbatim. Data was analyzed through thematic analysis in a descriptive manner using narrative text to make conclusions relevant to the topic of the study.
The pregnant adolescents expressed the need to be treated with respect and have separate antenatal space. The need for medical care services, maternity dresses and a mama kit to use during delivery also emerged. Additionally, good feeding so that their babies grow well, information on pregnancy, birth and preparation for parenthood, family and social support were key. The study found that adolescents require family support from husbands and the parents of the husbands, community and peers and support on preparation for labour and birth to enable them go through the pregnancy.
Pregnant adolescents have specific antenatal needs given their young age and require the support of family,friends,thehealth personnel and the community to realise positive pregnancy outcomes.There is a need to implement a comprehensive adolescent friendly antenatal package that is accustomed to address their specific needs and prepare them for parenthood.Consideration of the different social support and physical environment that influence pregnant adolescents behaviour and decisions towards antenatal attendance will promote good health for the mother and baby.
It would be good if adolescents are provided with a comprehensive antenatal care package that addresses their specific needs and are adequately prepared for parenthood. Programs implementing services for pregnant adolescents need to understand that pregnant adolescents decisions and behaviours result from interactions with her social and physical surroundings,therefore tackling their specifc needs will lead to positive pregancy outcomes.
